History

In 1989 Unitarian Universalists as individuals created U. U. Housing Assistance Corporation, a membership non-profit organization, for the purpose of acquiring federally repossessed single-family homes, which they repaired and sold to low-income homebuyers at an average cost of $35,000.

Since 1994 the City of San Antonio has partnered with UU HAC to support its Owner-occupied Rehabilitation and Homeowner/Homebuyer Education and Counseling programs. These funds, which have averaged $700,000 per year, enable UU HAC to provide low-interest loans and grants to homeowners in City Council Districts 1 & 2, and 5.

UU HAC is a unique organization in that it is one of three local organizations that provide this type of program in San Antonio.  Its area of focus is the older neighborhoods located just north and east of downtown San Antonio.   Its board and staff make every effort to address the desires and concerns of these neighborhoods' residents who want their communities to be livable and the integrity of their neighborhood housing stock preserved.

Programs utilizing private-sector funding have included a partnership with Broadway National Bank and the San Antonio Housing Trust to make lower-interest rate repair loans to homeowners, a program with Freddie Mac and lending institutions to provide homebuyer counseling, and interest-free construction financing from Private Mortgage Insurance, Inc., to build new homes.
